An Atmospheric Bridge Between the Subpolar and Tropical Atlantic Regions: A Perplexing Asymmetric Teleconnection

چکیده
The largest sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies associated with Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMV) occur over the subpolar gyre, yet it is tropical from where global impacts of AMV originate. Processes that communicate SST change gyre to North thus comprise a crucial mechanism AMV. Here we use idealized model experiments show such communication accomplished by an “atmospheric bridge.” Our results demonstrate unexpected asymmetry: atmosphere effective in communicating cold SSTs north Atlantic, via immediate extratropical atmospheric circulation invokes slower wind-driven evaporative cooling along Eastern Basin and into tropics. Warm do not elicit robust response. highlight key dynamical feature for which warm phases are opposites.

Global Warming Attenuates the Tropical Atlantic-Pacific Teleconnection
Changes in global sea surface temperature (SST) since the end of last century display a pattern of widespread warming intercepted by cooling in the eastern equatorial Pacific and western coasts of the American continent. Studies have suggested that the cooling in the eastern equatorial Pacific may be partly induced by warming in the North Atlantic. However, it remains unknown how stable this in...

15 صفحه اولContributions of Downstream Eddy Development to the Teleconnection between ENSO and the Atmospheric Circulation over the North Atlantic
The spatiotemporal evolution of various meteorological phenomena associated with El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the North Pacific–North American–North Atlantic sector is examined using both NCEP–NCAR reanalyses and output from a 2000-yr integration of a global coupled climate model. Particular attention is devoted to the implications of downstream eddy developments on the relationship b...

An Atmospheric Teleconnection Linking ENSO and Southwestern European Precipitation
Numerous studies have demonstrated statistical associations between the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and precipitation in the Mediterranean basin. The dynamical bases for these teleconnections have yet to be fully identified. Here, observational analyses and model simulations are used to show how ENSO variability affects rainfall over southwestern Europe (Iberia, Southern France, and Ita...
